Poster on the right (not) to use the internet wins jury prize

05.12.2025

On 14 November, Suay Ergin, doctoral researcher of the R(N)2UI project at the Law & Technology research group of Ghent University, was awarded the first prize of the jury for the poster “Reframing the digital gateway: exploring the right (not) to use the internet” at the Faculty of Law and Criminology Research Day.

Each year, the Faculty of Law and Criminology of Ghent University organises a Research Day where researchers present their work and discover projects from colleagues across the faculty through talks and posters. The jury awarded this year’s first prize to Suay Ergin for a clear and engaging presentation of her research on the emerging rights to use – and not to use – the internet (R[N]2UI), and their implications for access to essential services and participation in society, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups.  The project aims to conduct normative research on whether and how these two rights can and should be conceptualised and operationalised in today’s digital reality.

This research forms part of a larger WEAVE research project which will establish a European Observatory of the R(N)2UI, together with the University of Białystok. The observatory will map, monitor and critically assess ongoing legal and policy developments on these rights in Council of Europe Member States, with particular attention to vulnerable groups.
